Overview
Cities do not only account for 57 % of the world’s population but also for 70% of the global waste. The transition towards a resource efficient and circular economy has been proclaimed by the European Commission with the New Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan. Cities are in an exceptional position to enable citizens to reduce waste and develop more sustainable consumption patterns. One key tool are Urban Resource Centers, physical centers that help facilitate sustainable consumption, waste prevention, re-use, repair and recycling in urban areas. Within the framework of the summer university, it is planned to teach the students theoretical and practical concepts and practices of Circular Economy in urban areas and to explore its multidisciplinary. The course is co-organized with the Urban Resource Centre „Haus der Materialisierung“ in Berlin. The center is located centrally at the Alexanderplatz as part of the pioneer projects in the “Haus der Statistik”, Europe’s largest city lab (hausderstatistik.org/model-project-haus-der-statistik/).
The course provides a platform for various disciplines (environmental engineering, industrial design, architecture/urban planning/urban management, civil engineering, production engineering, industrial ecology) to explore places, experiment with materials, co-design products and interact with stakeholder around circularizing cities.
The general goal is to understand, analyze and implement the concept of Urban Resource Centers as a nucleus for sustainable consumption and production in cities.
More objectives are to:
- Identify urban material flows and concepts for modern waste management and Circular Economy in cities
- Discuss and communicate the role of Urban Resource Centers in the context of sustainable consumption and production
- Analyze and debate conflicting interest of stakeholder groups in the Circular Economy
- Demonstrate strategies to valorize untapped materials based on a practical materials workshop
- Design strategies how to scale up and multiply Urban Resource Centers in the context of urban planning and management
