Overview

Overview

This course offers an immersive experience in planetary science and exploration. Students will have the opportunity to engage directly with leading experts in the field and witness planetary research in action.

Key topics that will be addressed span the fundamental physics of planetary science “including gravity and orbital dynamics” and the methods of planetary exploration, from imaging and spectrometry to seismology. Students will also delve into the evolution of planetary surfaces, with a focus on tectonic, volcanic and cratering processes. The course further features presentations on the past, present, and future of planetary exploration, covering missions like Apollo and Artemis on the Moon, as well as upcoming missions such as Psyche and Europa Clipper.

Beyond the classroom, students will participate in hands-on practical exercises, including coding and geologic mapping, equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Learning Goals

Students are expected to obtain general knowledge on

  • The architecture of the solar system
  • The surface and interior properties of the terrestrial- and outer planets and their moons, but also of asteroids and comets
  • The relevant physics and methods of planetary exploration, with practical geologic mapping and coding experience
  • Planetary evolution, with a focus on volcanic, tectonic, and cratering processes
  • Past, current, and future planetary exploration missions
  • Landing site assessment on rocky bodies and space mission planning
