Übersicht

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, are considered a pivotal technology for the 21st century. Generating plenty of applications ranging from sensing, data collection and filming, to medical use or commercial last mile delivery, drones are linked to the overarching motivation of making processes faster, safer and more flexible.

This course will provide an holistic picture of current and future drone applications with a special focus on shaping drone use for the public benefit. Therefore, the course will combine state-of-the art theoretical and empirical insights (e.g. public acceptance, user adoption, environmental assessments) with insights on technological, regulatory and business environments as well as on living labs and real-world demonstrators.

As a result of the course, participants will have gained broad and systematic knowledge about the benefits as well as the challenges and limitations of drone use. They will be able to strongly differentiate and evaluate the subject. Moreover, the gained knowledge can foster future strategic and long-term thinking about this strongly emerging tec trend and can be translated into the participants’ various study and disciplinary backgrounds with regards to potential topics for theses or even future career paths.

Learning Goals:

  • Insights into benefits, challenges and limitations of applying unmanned aerial systems in urban and rural contexts
  • First-hand information and live-demonstrations of innovative drone-applications
  • Obtaining knowledge about key factors driving public acceptance of drone use
  • Tools and necessities of user and civic participation
  • Basics of drone-related cost structures and business environments
  • Ability to transfer and tailor drone applications to individual use-cases
